Fujifilm has announced that it is developing its first movie camera, the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA, which is scheduled to be released in 2025. Fujifilm said their goal is to “become a leader in a new era of video production, creating timeless masterpieces.”
The GFX ETERNA, currently under development, is the company’s first dedicated camera for video production. It combines FUJIFILM’s knowledge and experience in video production with the technology of the GFX series. With its medium format sensor, the ability to process large amounts of shooting data at high speed, and highly flexible post-processing, the GFX ETERNA will provide new value for video production with rich layering and picture expression.
The GFX ETERNA uses the same 102MP CMOS II HS large-format sensor as the GFX100 II medium-format mirrorless camera, paired with FUJIFILM’s latest 5th-generation X-Processor 5 image processing engine with fast readout speed.
The camera has a boxy form factor and looks a bit like the Sony FX6. It has HDMI, SDI, genlock, Ethernet, USB-C, 2-pin LEMO DC output and a V-mount battery plate. The status and menu screens are on the non-operator side of the camera, but there may also be another screen on the other side. There does not appear to be an internal ND filter. The recording media is likely to be CFexpress Type B. Some also think it will inherit the autofocus capabilities of the GFX 100 II.
Fujifilm said that in recent years, with the expansion of production applications such as short films, documentaries, web videos, and movies, the demand for fast, low-cost, high-quality video production has been growing. In preparation for the launch of GFX ETERNA, Fujifilm will promote field testing and expand its product lineup to enhance the GFX system and contribute to high-quality and efficient video production.
In addition to the GFX ETERNA, Fujifilm is also developing a power zoom lens optimized for cameras. It will have an equivalent focal length of 32-90mm and a GL-PL mount adapter to allow the use of PL mount lenses.
Fujifilm will showcase the GFX ETERNA prototype at InterBEE 2024 from November 13 to 15, 2024.
As for the price, the GFX100 II medium format mirrorless camera retails for $7,499, and it’s conceivable that the new GFX ETERNA will certainly cost more than that.
