At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple mentioned our new camera, the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive. The camera is still in development but we wanted to share some more details about it here.
We are not just developing Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive, we are working on a complete end-to-end workflow that can be used with DaVinci Resolve to create feature-quality Apple Immersive Video on Vision Pro. We think that the combination of Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive and DaVinci Resolve will provide filmmakers with a complete workflow from capture to editing to delivery of Apple Immersive Video. This is very exciting and marks the future of entertainment.
Based on the new Blackmagic URSA Cine platform, the new Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive model features a fixed custom lens system and a sensor with 8160 x 7200 resolution per eye with pixel level synchronization. It has an extremely wide 16 stops of dynamic range and can be captured in stereoscopic format at 90fps into Blackmagic RAW Immersive files. The new Blackmagic RAW Immersive file format is an enhanced version of the Blackmagic RAW format, making it easy to use immersive video throughout the post-production pipeline.
Blackmagic URSA Cine also features a custom lens system that is specifically designed for URSA Cine’s large format image sensor, which reads and stores extremely accurate position data during production. In addition, this immersive lens data is mapped, calibrated and stored in Blackmagic RAW files per eye, and can be entered into post-production as part of the Blackmagic RAW Immersive file. This eliminates the need to capture an immersive scene in multiple files.
The latest update to DaVinci Resolve makes it the first immersive video editing software.
This update includes a number of upgrades and changes to support immersive workflows, including a new immersive video viewer that lets editors pan, tilt and scroll clips and view them on a 2D monitor. Even better, clips can even be adjusted and viewed on an Apple Vision Pro, providing a fully immersive editing experience. This is a great feature.
Transitions rendered by Vision Pro can also be bypassed using XML metadata, giving editors a clean master file where the transitions were rendered in Vision Pro. Export presets can enable output to a data package for direct viewing on Apple Vision Pro.
We have been working on the new Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive and the new version of DaVinci Resolve which will be released later this year. Here are some pictures of the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive hardware for you to see.
